IMPORTANT ELCTION UPDATES FROM THE 2024/2025 LEGISLATIVE SESSIONS:
HEY TANGI, WE HAVE BIG ELECTION NEWS!
Act 84 of the 2025 Legislative session dissolves the “Independent” party in Louisiana. Any voter registered as “Independent” will be automatically changed to “No Party”, effective 08/01/25. If this change affects you, you will receive a notice from the Registrar of Voters.
The confusion with the “Independent” party is that most voters assumed by being registered as an “Independent”, that they were not affiliated with an actual political party, when in fact, the “Independent” party is an actual political party. The only registration title that is NOT affiliated with a political party is the “No Party” title.
If you are an “Independent” party currently, this change will happen automatically; however, if you wish to change to a different political party, you can visit: https://voterportal.sos.la.gov/VoterRegistration, or download the Geauxvote app (available for iphone/android), or visit the Registrar of Voters office near you (Amite/Hammond).
The Closed Party Primary Election System was implemented by Act 1 of the 2024 Extraordinary Legislative Session.
In Closed Party Primaries, Democrats can only vote for the Democratic party candidate and Republicans can only vote for the Republican party candidate in these elections.
Further, these Closed Party Primary elections will only be held (at this time), for the following offices, beginning in the Spring of 2026:
- Board of Elementary and Secondary Education (BESE)
- US Senate and US Representative
- Public Service Commissioner
- Supreme Court
However, if you are registered as a “No Party” , you are eligible to participate in the Closed Party Primary Election, by completing a “Declaration of Ballot Choice” when you go to vote. This form will allow you to designate whether you wish to vote in the closed party primary for either the Democrat or Republican candidates, or you may choose to vote as “No Party” only, and vote for only those items on the ballot that are not associated with the Closed Party Primary election such as municipal candidate races and/or propositions/amendments. Either way, if you are registered as “No Party” you will need to fill out this Declaration. Additionally, however you chose to vote in the first party primary is how you must vote in the second party primary in the Spring (ex. if you declare to vote for the Republican candidate in the first party primary, you must vote for the Republican candidate in the second party primary.
Please note that the Closed Party Primary elections will be conducted only in the Spring. Regular Fall elections are not affected by these changes. In the Fall, you are eligible to vote however you choose without filling out a Declaration Form.
